As a busy mam of three young children and a secondary school teacher working long hours, Jemma, the founder of Creative Kitchen, understands the challenge of keeping kids engaged in meaningful activities. During her maternity leave in 2019, she recognised a real need for fun, educational experiences that also taught basic life skills, particularly in the kitchen.
That's when the seed for Creative Kitchen was planted. Combining her passion for cooking with her love of teaching, Jemma envisioned a space where children could explore the world of food through hands-on, interactive experiences. Creative Kitchen is the realisation of that vision—a place where kids can learn valuable life skills, unleash their creativity, and cultivate a lifelong love of cooking.
This venture is the perfect recipe, blending Jemma's unique skillset. Her experience as a teacher provides the foundation for engaging and educational classes, while her business degree has been instrumental in growing Creative Kitchen from a simple idea into the thriving business it is today. Just like any good recipe, Jemma has continued to learn and refine her approach throughout the early days of the business, constantly striving to be the best and offer kids the best possible experience. The latest ingredient in Creative Kitchen's recipe for fun? Jemma is now a qualified Forest School Leader, which means exciting new opportunities for outdoor culinary adventures, like campfire cooking! She's committed to mixing things up and staying ahead of the curve, ensuring Creative Kitchen continues to deliver unforgettable cooking experiences.
Why choose Creative Kitchen?
Creative Kitchen is a children’s cooking school based in Consett, Co. Durham, offering a variety of interactive cooking workshops suitable for toddlers to teens. We serve the local community with year-round workshops, including regular weekday sessions, holiday clubs, and one-off events.
Our cooking workshops cater to children aged 18 months and up, providing hands-on experiences and access to real kitchen tools. This allows children of all ages to fully participate in cooking activities, from weighing and measuring to mixing, cutting, creating, and, of course, cooking up lots of fun!
Our "Little Chef" workshops are designed with imaginative themes to spark creativity, while our "Junior Chef" workshops (primarily for ages 8-12) focus on building kitchen confidence and developing essential cooking and nutrition skills, applying math and science concepts in a practical way.
Why bring your child to a Creative Kitchen workshop?
We're passionate about engaging children in cooking and believe in the many benefits of starting young:
● Helps combat fussy eating: Exposure to different foods and the cooking process can encourage children to try new things.
● Develops fine motor and hand-eye coordination: Working with utensils and ingredients enhances these crucial skills.
● Promotes healthy eating habits: Children learn about nutrition and make healthier choices when involved in food preparation.
● Aids sensory exploration: Cooking engages all the senses, from touching different textures to smelling delicious aromas.
● Develops confidence and independence: Successfully creating a dish boosts self-esteem and encourages self-reliance.
● Supports language and communication development: Workshops provide opportunities for children to learn new vocabulary and interact with others.
● Allows for quality family time: Cooking together can be a fun and rewarding shared experience.
It’s a whole load of tasty fun! Above all, we strive to make learning about food enjoyable and memorable.
All of our cooking workshops are run by fully qualified members of staff. All of our team are certified to Level 2 for Food, Hygiene and preparation, allergy trained and DBS checked. All workshops are planned by a fully qualified secondary Food and Nutrition teacher with many years of experience.

Creative Kitchen was born from my love of teaching and passion for cooking, creating a space where kids can experience the joy of cooking while learning valuable life skills. I love empowering children through food, helping them build confidence, creativity, and teamwork. Plus, with my recent forest school leader training, campfire cooking is next on the menu!
I was attracted to Creative Kitchen for the opportunity to develop a thriving business with a genuine passion for making a difference. The energy shown by Jemma, along with her commitment and dedication to creating a positive impact on everyone we engage with, makes this journey incredibly rewarding.
I joined Creative Kitchen to achieve a better work-life balance, and it was the perfect fit! What began with baking sweet treats quickly turned into teaching, combining my love of baking with my background as a qualified teaching assistant. It’s incredibly rewarding to see kids light up when they create something delicious!
I joined for a change of direction and the chance to work with a variety of children, bringing together my passion for teaching and cooking. It’s rewarding to see each child grow and develop over the term while I enjoy the different experiences everyday!
I have a strong creative side and have always wanted to work with children, helping them learn and develop new skills. I love the variety of events—one day it’s a princess theme, and the next it’s making Stitch and pizzas!
I’ve been part of Creative Kitchen since the beginning, helping with everything from setup to recipe testing and theme creation. I love the energetic environment, especially the teen cooking sessions, and my favorite things to make are brownies and Chinese food!
